Allegro Invitational Event

(June 3rd 2013)

Thirteen players participated in our 6 round Allegro event where each person had 15 minutes to complete all their moves. Steven Kelly scored 5/6 to win outright and Paul Hendry 4/6 to claim the grading prize.

West of Scotland Success

(May 28th 2013)

Congratulations go to John Pearston on winning the Minor Event at the Ayr Congress and thus claiming the West of Scotland title with 4.5/5.

New Club Champion

(May 13th 2013)

Many congratulations to David Johnstone on winning the club championship outright with a score of 4.5/5. In second place was Steven Kelly (4) and third Raph Stirrat (3.5).

Championes

(April 30th 2013)

After two superb 4-1 away victories at Grangemouth and Dunfermline we faced Badger's Brook in the penultimate match of the season where a win for either team would claim the title and a draw result in us requiring at least a draw away to Stirling the following Monday. However another great performance from Cumbernauld makes our Stirling match now academic thanks to our 3.5-1.5 triumph against Badger's Brook and thus we claim the Central League title for the first time since 1989.

Title Decider

(April 25th 2013)

We are now as they say at the business end of the season and so played our final match away to championship rivals Crowwood requiring a win to take the Lanarkshire League title. Cumbernauld lead 2-1 but unfortunately in the final match a real ding dong battle between Elaine and Graeme Nolan  saw the latter get the win to seal the draw and title for Crowwood. Many congratulations to our North Lanarkshire neighbours on their successful title defence.

Relegation

(April 15th 2013)

Our relegation from the Glasgow League top division was confirmed this evening after Inverclyde's draw at Bearsden.

National League Survival

(March 24th 2013)

Our place in the top national league was assured for a fourth consecutive season today and a record league points haul to boot with a 3-2 victory over Edinburgh University. We started the match with a two point advantage as the students could only muster a team of three, and so Steven Kelly's win on board three secured the match points. As relegation rivals Forth Valley lost their match to already relegated Giffnock our first division status was assured whatever our final result, still nice to finish with a win.

Junior Medal Winners

(March 10th 2013)

All three Cumbernauld Juniors to enter the March Hamilton Congress managed to pick up medals by scoring 50% or above. In the under 600 section we had Hannah Wallace (3/5) and Aiden Connor (2.5/5) whilst in the under 300 section Euan Wallace (3/6).

Scottish Girls Championship

(February 23rd 2013)

Unfortunaley Hannah Wallace wasn't able to retain her P5 & Under title but still came a very creditable 2nd with a score of 7.5/9. Hannah was tied on points with Yvonne Zhuo  prior to them meeting  in the final round in which  the Lenzie Chess Academy member triumphed. In the secondary event Liza Bazsant picked up the S4 & above performance award with a score of 4/6.

Major Success

(February 10th 2013)

Congratuatlions to John Pearston on picking up the grading prize with a score of 3/5 in the Hamilton Congress Major event.

Club Championship gets Underway

(January 14th 2013)

A bumper fifteen entrants are participating in this year's championship. There were several closely fought contests in the seven first round matches but no shocks with the highest graded player winning on  every board..

Chess Scotland Coaches

(November 29th 2012)

Derek McAteer who takes our junior section on Tuesday evenings is now a registered coach with Chess Scotland.

Dragon Slayers

(November 25th 2012)

Seven Cumbernauld Junior players represented their school (Holy Cross Primary) at the Dragon League in Milngavie Town Hall on Sunday with the A and B teams coming home with gold medals and a silver plate after winning all their matches in Divisions 2 and 3 respectively. The individual scores from the A team were Aiden Connor (P6) 4/5, James Brown (P6) 5/5, Hannah Wallace (P5) 4/5 and the B team Cory McGovern (P6) 5/5, Luca Marchetti (P6) 4.5/5, Euan Wallace (P3) 3/5.

Oban Congress

(November 18th 2012)

In the Open tournament Alan Grant scored an impressive 4/5 to take second place and Ian Marks picked up a grading prize with 3/5.

Our Friends in the East

(November 15th 2012)

A call for help had to go out as at one point only four players were available for our Glasgow League 1 match away to Hamilton A who regrettably were unable to rearrange this fixture for us. Thankfully two Dunfermline players came to our rescue, and with another two members able to reorganise prior engagements we managed to field 8 boards. Unfortunately we weren't able to emulate our B teams 2.5-1.5 win (overcoming an average 222 point grading difference) against  their B team on the Monday night, still a 5.5-2.5 defeat is better than an 8-0 default!

Dundee and Angus Congress

(October 14th 2012)

A good weekend for the Cumbernauld contingent at Dundee.

Open
Alan & Elaine* 3½/5
Kevin (share of the U-1850 grading prize) and Ian 3/5
Steven 2/5 (but played a lovely controlled performance for a great win v Michael Grove in round 3)

*Drew with each other in last round.
Alan and Ian were both undefeated.

Major
Performance of the weekend goes to John. Board 1 every round, leading with 3½/4 but, alas, slipped up in the last round. Nevertheless, still 2nd= with a grading performance of 1674, 279 points above his published grade (best in the event). A tremendous performance and one to be proud of. Well done!

Central League

(October 1st 2012)

Cumbernauld played the last of their four Autumn league fixtures with their third 3-2 home win of the season so far. So we can enter Central League hibernation proudly sitting top of the table and look forward to League and Cup action commencing again in the Spring.
